Maxalt 5mg or Generic Rizatriptan acts as an agonist at serotonin receptors, 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors and binds with high affinity. Maxalt induces vasoconstriction by binding to 5-HT1B/1D receptors located on intracranial blood vessels and exerts its therapeutic effects in the treatment of migraine headache. It also inhibits the release of calcitonin peptide from sensory neurons in the trigeminal nerve.

Therapeutic Indications

Maxalt 5mg is a FDA approved medicine and can be used both in adults and paediatric patients 6 to 17 years of age. It is a well-known drug for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura.

How to take Maxalt 5mg?

The recommended initial dose of Maxalt is either 5 mg or 10 mg for the acute treatment of migraines in adults. The 5mg dose is safer than 10mg as 10mg may have a greater risk of adverse effects, although it may provide a greater effect.

After consuming a tablet, if your headache does not entirely go away, or goes away and arise back, take a second tablet two hours after the first. It is advised not to take more than 30 mg of rizatriptan in a day. You should consult your doctor in case you have more than four headaches in a month.
