Xefo is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used as a painkiller (analgesic) and an anti-rheumatic drug belongs to the “oxicams” class. It is prescribed for short term treatment of moderate to severe pain, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and their symptoms such as swelling of joints. Generic Lornoxicam is present in it as the chief active ingredient. It produces analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties. Lornoxicam is a non-selective inhibitor of both cyclooxygenase -1 and cyclooxygenase -2 enzymes.

Xefo contains Generic Lornoxicam is used in the characteristic treatment and management of pain and swelling accompanying osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and for postoperative pain management.

Contraindications of Xefo

DO NOT use this drug in the following classes of patients:

  • Patients with severe liver and renal impairment
  • Patients with thrombocytopenia (increased number of platelets)
  • Elderly patients (above 65 years of age) and young patients (below 18 years of age)
  • Pregnancy or lactation
  • Those hypersensitive to Generic Lornoxicam, or any of the ingredients in Xefo
  • Bleeding and coagulation disorders
  • Gastro-intestinal bleeding or cerebrovascular bleeding
  • Patients with severe or uncontrolled cardiac failure
  • Patients with active or history of peptic ulceration
  • Those who have a history of allergic reactions (rhinitis, angioedema, or urticaria) to other NSAIDS like aspirin

Drug Interactions of Xefo

Some drugs interact with Xefo and increase or decrease its potency:

  • Digoxin: decreased renal clearance of digoxin.
  • Cyclosporine: increased renal toxicity.
  • Methotrexate: increased concentration of high dose methotrexate
  • Other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen or aspirin: increased risk of adverse undesirable effects.
  • ACE inhibitors: the effect of the ACE inhibitor may lessen and there is a risk of acute renal deficiency.
  • Diuretics for example furosemide: reduced efficacy, stabilize the diuretic effect of furosemide.
  • Sulphonylureas drugs: may increase the hypoglycaemic influence.
  • Simultaneous administration of Xefo and anticoagulants may extend the bleeding time.
  • Lithium: might cause an increase of the lithium peak concentration and therefore results in a possible increase of adverse effects.

Dosage of Xefo

Xefo film-coated tablets are to be taken by mouth and should be administered before meals with a full glass of water.

Prescribed intake of Xefo

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis:

The initial permitted total daily dosage is 12 mg which can be divided in two or three doses. The maintenance dose should never go beyond 16 mg per day.

For the treatment of pain:

Xefo is to be taken in the dosage of 8 mg to 16 mg once a day given in 2 to 3 divided doses. The maximum daily dose is 16 mg; do not exceed this maximum dose.

Dose reduction in special population:

For patients with kidney or liver dysfunction, the maximal suggested daily dose is decreased to 12 mg.

Xefo is not advisable for use in children below 18 years of age. There is no condition for special dosage alteration in case of elderly patients, except renal or hepatic function is damaged. In case of kidney or liver dysfunction, the daily dosage should be limited.

Missed Dose

Do not take a double dose of this drug to make up for a missed tablet.


The general symptoms of overdose of this drug may include dizziness or disturbances in vision, nausea or vomiting. Please contact your nearby physician before these symptoms persist or worsen.

Possible Side Effects of Xefo

The possible side effects associated with the use of this drug may include:

  • Neurological: migraine, tremors, depression, insomnia (lack of sleep)
  • Eyes: Conjunctivitis, vision disorders
  • Musculo-skeletal: Cramps in leg, myalgia
  • Respiratory: Dyspnoea, symptoms of irritation in upper respiratory tract
  • Haematological: Anaemia, thrombocytopenia and prolonged bleeding time
  • Skin: Allergic skin reactions such as flushing, dermatitis and pruritus
  • Urogenital: fainting shortly after or during urination
  • Gastrointestinal: diarrhoea, gastritis, dry mouth, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, constipation, nausea, vomiting, flatulence, gastric ulcers with or without bleeding, dysphagia, stomatitis, gastro-oesophageal reflux, esophagitis, rectal bleeding
  • Miscellaneous: increased sweating, dizziness, loss of hair, changes in appetite, loss of weight, oedema, palpitations, fast heart rate, changes in blood pressure and weight increase.

Warnings and Precautions While Using Xefo

  • Avoid excess dosage of drug.
  • Care should be implemented in patients with a history of asthma, infections, any allergy, bleeding disorder, impaired kidney, liver, heart function, high blood pressure, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Avoid driving or engaging into any heavy physical activity that demands attention as this drug causes drowsiness or dizziness.
